Dr. Dave Nagel
For New Hampshire State Representative
Gilmanton, Gilford, Laconia Ward 2

Return to Sensibility
I am honored to represent Belknap County District 6, Gilmanton, Gilford, and Laconia Ward 2 in the upcoming election for New Hampshire State Representative.  I would like to thank all those who voted for me and worked on my behalf in the primary to make this happen.  We did this with a uniquely bi-partisan effort, one I hope will serve as a model not only for elections, but also for legislative efforts.

I would also like to reach out to those who did not vote for me.  It is my hope that we can convince you of the value and sincerity of our cause, to bring sensibility back to New Hampshire government and to empower the voiceless.
I stand with Gunstock Mountain Resort's management team and staff.
We appreciate everything you have done for our community!
“For every complex human problem, there is solution that is neat, simple, and wrong.”
-
H.L Mencken

For the past thirty years, I have strived to give a voice to the marginalized and the stigmatized of New Hampshire and our Nation as a physician, advocate, policy maker, author, teacher, Boy Scout leader, and coach.  In all I do, I stive to give hope to the hopeless, seeking to empower them and their families with the knowledge and services they need to find meaning in their lives.

In doing so, I have come to understand that, as Mencken says, there are no easy solutions for complex problems.  All voices are important.  Sometimes the best solutions come from the most unexpected sources.  When those voices are not heard, policy decisions too often are harmful, sometimes deadly.

As your representative, it is my intention to bring commonsense policy making to Concord by bringing voices together as equals and empowering those who otherwise would not be heard.

TESTIMONIALS

“Dr. Nagel would be an important voice among our state legislators.  He brings many years of medical expertise that is often needed in understanding the details of legislative goals and statute language.  Dr. Nagel is a rare individual who will bring Christian values, common sense and compassion for all. He is a long-time advocate in our state and nationally promoting humane treatment for those living with chronic pain.  Whether dealing with physical pain or existential pain, we can only benefit from the perspective that Dr. Nagel will offer.”

“There are few people like David, both in terms of character and commitment to community. His faith, experiences and perspectives have made a lasting mark on thousands of New Hampshire residents, including the disabled, the voiceless, and those suffering from mental health, addiction or chronic pain. At Catholic Charities NH, Dave is a member of our Healthcare Committee; he offers wonderful guidance, fresh perspectives and great strategic thinking in how we can continue to offer the most compassionate and comprehensive care for those we serve statewide.”

“Dave helped create the New Hampshire Board of Licensing, on which I have served as Chair for the past ten years.  We met when he asked me to join an ad hoc legislative committee dedicated to advocating for increased access to integrative care for those who suffer with chronic pain.  He is a passionate advocate who has demonstrated the ability to communicate and work effectively “across the aisle” with people from all political parties.  Dave describes himself as a commonsense Republican – passionate, compassionate, and thoughtful – ad I would say that is spot-on.”

“Dr. Nagel will be a tremendous asset to the state of New Hampshire as a State Representative.  He is a brilliant, engaging, and compassionate man who has the unique ability to make everyone in the room feel important.  Dr. Nagel is always open to having thoughtful discussions about even the most formidable topics; actually seeking out new ideas and perspectives.  He has long been a powerful voice and tireless advocate for pain patients here in New Hampshire and nationally.  I look forward to seeing what he accomplishes in the State House!”

“I had the privilege of meeting David Nagel through a consulting engagement and was blown away with his experience, purpose and integrity. My role was to help guide him to determine his highest priorities for the next 3-5 years and also the legacy he would like to leave behind. It was abundantly clear to me that he has a higher mission to serve people. As a world renowned expert and specialist in pain management, Dave is passionate about providing access to long term solutions for all those who suffer from chronic pain. This sentiment transcends medicine and is part of his human fabric. He wants to do good for others and make a difference, especially for those voices that may not otherwise be heard.”

“For nearly 15 years, my predecessor and I, along with colleagues at the Center for Practical Bioethics, a community-based health ethics organization, have had the privilege and honor of working with David Nagel on a variety of patient engagement initiatives, particularly with those whose voices often go unheard and unheeded – persons living with chronic pain. David is a man of his word, a deeply devoted physician and healer, a man who accompanies others in their darkest moments but never gives up hope. I am touched deeply, not only by his optimism about the resilience of the human spirit but his convictions about the good in all of us. He is who he says he is, and he honors his commitments by living his convictions. He is a quiet leader but one who loves to argue, study, and respond to the thorniest issues in life without losing his sense of humor or his hope in humanity. He listens well, and he speaks soulfully. One statement I’ve heard from him that pretty much says it all to me, is this: “When you close your heart or mind to anyone, you lose.”

“As an advocacy group facing a challenge most believed to be an improbability at best we hoped to attract the involvement of someone who had the rare blend of an intimate knowledge of New Hampshire’s healthcare delivery system and a working familiarity of the regulatory and legislative process here in the Granite State. We found this and more in Dr. David Nagel. Given his resolute and determined yet diplomatic and likable manner Dave was an essential, leading member of the effort that turned the “improbable” into the “achieved”. The result being compassionate, patient centered legislation that received bipartisan support and is now law here in New Hampshire.”

“I’ve known Dr. Dave Nagel 30+years—first as a caring dedicated physical medicine physician serving with me on the Physical Therapy Advisory Committee to the NH Board of Medicine for several years, and professionally in caring for our mutual patients.  It has also been a pleasure knowing him personally sharing family, ethical, faith, and patient advocacy concerns.  I feel I can truly attest Dave Nagel is the REAL deal.  He will fight tirelessly for patients and his beliefs, bringing sound medical experience and knowledge to any healthcare issues.”
